Three main goals for this academic school year

Prompt: My main goal for this academic year is to pass all of my classes with an A. As long as I have been in school I have gotten all As except for my AP Precalculus class which I got an 89 in last year so I hope to carry on those good grades until I graduate. I also hope to get 4s and 5s on my last 3 AP classes. I am taking AP Biology, AP Microeconomics and AP Calculus AB. Lastly I am hoping to figure out what I want to do after high school. While I am starting to think about college applications I am still kind of up in the air on what exactly I want to do.

Summary: We set up our blogger account.

Reflection: I am excited and kind of dreading a second year of blog posts.

 Response: I have been a gifted kid since I was in elementary school. Because of this I have been labeled as a smart kid who is good at all of my subjects without really ever having to try. People have asked me questions in class because I have been labeled the "smart kid" and there have been many times where I just stare at them blankly because I don't understand the question. A lot of teachers just assume I should know everything and will get extra frustrated with me because I am somehow supposed to know these things and it makes me really dejected when I dont know because they seem disappointed in me. Summary: We had an introduction to stereotypes. Reflection: I thought it was not very fun to think up stereotypes for a bunch of different groups of people.

In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother provides her daughter with numerous expectations about how a girl should behave. Reflect on a specific gender expectation within your culture that has been challenging for you to navigate. Then describe one clear example of this expectation and explain why it has been difficult for you. Keep your response concise, vivid, and focused on your personal experience.

 Response: Men are expected to dress a certain way that I could never really conform to. Fashion sense is usually reserved for women so a man adapting any sense of style, especially one like mine is seen as very feminine. Because of my sense of style many people have assumed I was a girl and told me that I must be a girm because of the way I dress. I have a wide variety of styles that I wear but I often get criticized for tucking in all my shirts and wearing my pants high waisted. Also since I dress semi-formal in my day to day I can get weird looks, especially from other men. Despite this I am very proud of my fashion sense even if it makes me feel a little ostracized from other men. Summary: We read "Girl" and answered questions about it. Reflection: I found this poem/passage a really interesting read. I think it portrayed expectations on women in a very engaging and unique style.

If someone tried to understand you using only your race, what important things would that person miss? Describe at least three other parts of your cultural identity that help make you who you are.

 Response: If someone tried to understand me only by my race they would miss things like where I grew up,my gender and my sexuality, which have all had a large impact on who I am as a person and how I act around others. A person is a combination of all their experiences and all the aspects of their identity. Taking away just one part of that identity strips that person of any complexity so trying to understand someone by just one bit of themselves like race is a complete disservice to their experiences and their life. Summary: We watched 3 videos about racial identity and answered questions in writable. Reflection: I found these videos really made me think about race in a way I hadn't before. I found discussion about it pretty interesting.
